Planes, Trains and Automobiles. 1987 (Sky On Demand)

A FUN TRIP

Wether John Hughes produces or directs, the films he is involved in always seem to be a great time. The likes of Home Alone and Ferrris Bueller all seem to have his magical touch. Here, he is in the directors chair for this hectic trip home involving Neil Page (Steve Martin) who on his travels, just can’t seem to stop bumping into the annoying loudmouth Del Griffith (John Candy). Wanting to get home for thanksgiving, everything that could possibly go wrong, does. You come accross films sometimes that just hit all the right notes. Films that are there for pure entertainment value and this is certainly one of them. Sure it’s no masterpiece, but just a well made comedy from the eighties. I loved the two main characters on screen together. They just get into so much bother which is fun and hilarious to see. The fact that Neil dislikes Del but Del just wants to be friends makes for an interesting and funny concept. With the runtime of just about ninety minutes, you can just sit back, have a good time and not take it too seriously. It’s worth noting too that this film contains one of the funniest scenes i’ve seen in a movie (best moment underneath) For a simple comedy and a real feel good film, you can’t really go wrong with this. Just don’t expect 'The Godfather 2’ of comedies. It has it’s niggles, but overall it’s good stuff.

Fun Fact : The big case Del carries around contains only a pillow and a picture of his wife.

Best Moment : When Steve Martin is at breaking point and begins to argue with a car rental clerk at the airport delivering a tirade of F-Bombs.

Best Quote (same scene) *Spoiler* After saying the 'F’ word numerous times to the clerk and being asked if he has his receipt, to which he doesnt she then replies with 'You’re F****d’

Score : 7.5/10
